Dialects and Accents, Regional Words That Are Fading

Akiyama: Yeah. I was actually born in Okinawa, though I grew up in Tokyo. My great grandmother had a really strong dialect, so strong that even my mom could not fully understand her. But by my generation, it is basically disappeared. That is kind of sad.
Maisie: It is the exact same thing in Australia. If you watch footage from the eighties, people have such a strong Australian accent. Now it has really mellowed out. I think TV has a lot to do with it.
Shimonaka: How about Frankston? Do you all have any accent there?
Maisie: Not really, maybe a little. There is a term, Bogan.
Akiyama: Bogan, interesting. Is that kind of like the UK’s Chav?
Maririn: What is a Chav?
Akiyama: Chav is basically someone with a vibe similar to what you would call a Yankee in Japan, so I was just checking if that is the right read.
Maisie: Yeah, that is pretty close. There are two terms, Bogan and Aussie, Aussie just means an Australian person in general. Bogan refers to something a bit more specific, like a young guy who dresses in Adidas gear, similar to Chav.
Akiyama: We have the word Yankee in Japanese too. I think it originally comes from English, but yankii has basically become its own thing in Japanese now, it refers to young kids trying to look tough or wild, that kind of style.
Shimonaka: When I went to Frankston, honestly the town reminded me of Kawasaki. Kawasaki is close to Tokyo, kind of how Frankston is close to Melbourne, and Kawasaki has that same kind of delinquent, Yankee image.
Maisie: (laughs) Wait, is Yankee spelled Y-A-N-K-E-E? Is not that the same word you use for an American?
Akiyama: Yeah, exactly, I think it is the same word originally (laughs).
A Message for the Fans

Maisie: Thank you so much to everyone who came out to the shows. Japanese people are honestly some of the kindest people in the world, I did not expect to be welcomed this warmly. We definitely want to come back, as soon as we possibly can. Thank you.

Profiles
The Belair Lip Bombs

The Belair Lip Bombs are an indie rock band from Frankston, Australia, made up of Maisie Everett, Mike Bradvica, Jimmy Droughton, and Daniel Dev Devlin. The band formed at Singing Bird Studios, a DIY venue on the outskirts of Melbourne. They have built a sound inspired by classic rock greats like The Rolling Stones and Television, alongside indie stalwarts such as The War On Drugs and Stephen Malkmus. Their music is defined by what they call yearn core, a term of their own coining for its light rhythms, warm and fuzzy guitar melodies, and Maisie’s cathartic vocals. In 2023 they released their debut album 『Lush Life』, which earned high praise from The Guardian.
DYGL

DYGL is a four piece Japanese rock band made up of Nobuki Akiyama (Vo., Gt.), Yosuke Shimonaka (Gt.), Yotaro Kachi (Ba.), and Kohei Kamoto (Dr.). The band formed within a university circle in 2012. Their name comes from a word meaning fluorescent or cheaply flashy. In 2017, working with The Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr. as producer, they released their debut album 『Say Goodbye to Memory Den』. Since then they have kept up an energetic pace of activity both in Japan and abroad. Their 5th album 『Who’s in the House?』, released in August 2025, was recorded entirely in single takes, chasing a rawer, more live feeling texture that marks a new chapter for the band.
