Where Does “Thee” Come From? — The Journey of One Word Connecting Surabaya, Tokyo, and East Los Angeles

For many Japanese listeners, “Thee” immediately brings to mind THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT.

That band dominated Japan’s rock scene in the 1990s, and their name carried the word “Thee” — but where did it actually come from?

The answer began to take shape, unexpectedly, through Thee Marloes, a band from Surabaya, Indonesia.

In an interview with BELONG Media / A-indie, Sinatra Dlarka mentioned the origin of the band name almost in passing.

“We were listening to Thee Midniters a lot back then, so we added ‘Thee.'” That single remark led somewhere deeper than expected.

The word “Thee” traces a line from East Los Angeles in the 1960s, through the British garage rock scene, and into the history of Japanese rock.

In this article, we follow that lineage step by step. Please note that the second half of this article is a paid section, available for 300 yen.

The paid section covers the background behind San Francisco’s Thee Oh Sees adopting “Thee” — a story that involves both a homage to a garage rock legend and a wonderfully punk-spirited act of mischief aimed at the music press.

Why Thee Marloes Chose “Thee”

Thee Marloes are a three-piece band from Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city.

Their music blends Indonesian and English lyrics naturally, and their sound revives the intimate warmth of 1960s soul for a contemporary audience, quietly crossing genre boundaries as it goes.

They were picked up by a prestigious New York label and released their second album, Di Hotel Malibu.

In the BELONG Media / A-indie interview, Sinatra Dlarka spoke about the band name:

“We were looking for a name that wouldn’t come up connected to music when you searched for it on Google. One of the names we found was ‘Marloes’ — it’s actually a place name. We added ‘Thee’ because we were listening to Thee Midniters a lot at the time.”

Marloes is a small village in west Wales. Search for it and no music band should appear.

That simple idea, combined with a genuine respect for Thee Midniters, gave birth to the name Thee Marloes. So what kind of band were Thee Midniters — and why “Thee”?

The Origin of “Thee” — East Los Angeles, 1964

Thee Midniters were a rock band formed in East Los Angeles, California, in 1960.

Known for a powerful sound rooted in R&B and garage rock, they scored hits in 1965 with “Land of a Thousand Dances” and “Whittier Boulevard.”

They were among the earliest bands to produce mainstream hits from within the Hispanic American community.

Their sound — an original combination of horn section, congas, and electric guitar — carried a forward-thinking quality that anticipated Chicago and Blood, Sweat and Tears.

Why “Thee” rather than “The”? The reason was straightforward and practical.

At the time, an R&B group called The Midnighters, led by Hank Ballard, already existed, and the spelling was changed to avoid confusion.

The solution chosen was the word “Thee,” derived from the second-person singular in Old English. (Source: Language Log, July 27, 2005, Mark Liberman)

From this point, the paid section explains how the “Thee” spelling spread through the garage rock scene, and the individual reasons it appears in the names of Thee Oh Sees and THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT.

This is the story of how a single word born in East Los Angeles traveled through the United Kingdom and was passed down to bands around the world.
