“Godzilla,” Japanese Culture, and a Message for Japanese Listeners

-Yuuki Takita: About “Goddamn, Lizard Man!”, this track was inspired by the Japanese “Godzilla,” right? How did you come across “Godzilla”? Are there any other aspects of Japanese culture that interest you?
Billy Ward: The track wasn’t inspired by Godzilla, although the movies are great! When we were thinking about artwork ideas for the album cover a Godzilla poster seemed like a good option to represent the song – a truly monstrous and monolithic icon. We are super interested in lots of areas of Japanese culture! We all love studio ghibli of course -Vera had Finnish translated DVD’s of My Neighbour Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service when she was a kid, and we still keep a plush of the cat bus in our tour van. We’ve had lots of fun at Otoboke Beaver concerts, Clio has been reading Nana, and Billy has been revisiting the films of Akira Kurosawa recently. Or in what kind of situation would you like people to listen to it? If there are specific points you’d like listeners to pay attention to in terms of lyrics or sound, please let us know.
A: We hope Cannonball provides the listener with an auditory tool that romanticises their own thoughts and experiences – whoever that may be! It’s out of our hands now, we just want it to move people.

Writer: Yuuki Takita

Born in 1991 in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Yuuki Takita is a freelance writer. After graduating from the same university as the comedy troupe TEAM NACS, he enrolled in a music vocational school, majoring in writing.

There, he produced three separate music fanzines, handling everything from artist interviews to editing.

Drawing on that experience, he joined a cross-media music company running both a fanzine and a web publication, where he wrote and edited reviews and worked in sales.

After leaving that job, he moved into retail at a major record store chain, where he also contributed disc review articles for the company’s own outlet.

That experience became the starting point for his career as a freelance music writer. Today, he balances a day job with music writing while dreaming of one day launching an outdoor music festival in his hometown of Tomakomai.

He enjoys watching movies with his cat and reading. Following Komatsu Nana and hunting down good curry and biryani are part of his lifestyle.
