Gia Margaret: On Reclaiming Her Voice and the Meaning of Singing

Who 『Singing』 Is For, and What Comes Next

The Moment She Hopes You Listen

-Yuuki Takita: Who would you most like to hear 『Singing』? Or in what kind of situation do you imagine someone listening to it? Are there particular points in the lyrics or the sound that you would especially like listeners to pay attention to?

Gia Margaret: I imagine someone listening to this on a summer day, after a bit too much sun. Maybe after a cooling shower and with a window cracked open! (My favorite feeling in the world!) I would like anyone who has gone through hardship or grief or anyone who feels stuck in their sadness to listen to this and feel some encouraging energy. I wrote a lot of these songs to myself and thought about the things I needed to start experiencing life in a more easeful way or with more self-acceptance. And I’m not claiming that my life is totally easeful all the time, I’m not sure life is ever like that. But I think making this record made me realize that there’s room for both joy and despair. You can go through a hard time, but you can also call a friend or take a trip or experience joy even through the worst of it. It is your right as a human, and if you’re reading this, you’re alive. Go be alive, life is really short.

Toward the Next Project

-Yuuki Takita: The press materials note that by the time you were working on the final track 「E-Motion」, you felt “ready to move forward.” What does the future look like for you from here?

Gia Margaret: I think I’m ready to get hyper-experimental on the next project. This one had me feeling brave at the end of it. I’m not sure what that means yet but it’ll be fun to figure out 🙂 I hope I can collaborate more with Masakatsu Takagi for sure!

A Message for Listeners in Japan

Gia Margaret
-Yuuki Takita: There are many music fans in Japan who love your work. As a final question, do you have a message for your listeners in Japan?

Gia Margaret: Just that I love you, I guess. And I can’t wait to come back. No one has made me feel more appreciated as a musician than my japanese audience. Unreal.

Writer: Yuuki Takita

Born in 1991 in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Yuuki Takita is a freelance writer. After graduating from the same university as TEAM NACS, he enrolled at a music vocational school and majored in its writing course.

There he produced three music fanzines, handling everything from artist interviews to editing.

Drawing on that experience, he joined a cross-platform music media company with both a print fanzine and a web presence, where he wrote and edited reviews and worked in sales.

After leaving the company he moved into retail, working at a major record shop and writing disc reviews for its in-house publication.

That role led him to launch his career as a freelance music writer. Today he is a salaried worker and music writer who dreams of one day staging an outdoor music festival in his hometown of Tomakomai.

He enjoys spending time with his cat, watching films, and reading. Exploring curry and biryani spots with Nana Komatsu is a way of life.
