The Meaning Behind the Band Name

Kento Yamazaki: About the name origin, I wanted to use “The.” Do you know The Locust? There’s a noise hardcore band from San Diego. At first, I really wanted to do hardcore, but for me, I thought it would be good to become a band that mixes everyone’s favorite music together. “Hatch” means “spawning,” laying eggs, being “born”—I thought that was nice. It’s a bit uncool and easy to call. So now, I don’t necessarily want to do hardcore…

Midori Yamada: No, we want to do hardcore.

Kento Yamazaki: But those feelings waver. I think it’s fine if we play music everyone likes and it turns out good. So I think it’s turning out to match the original meaning we put into the band name.

Starting from Metal and Changes in Musical Style

－Maririn: Since you started in a metal circle, was your musical style metal-oriented at first?

Kento Yamazaki: It was blast beat “da-ka-da-ka-da-ka” sounds. Power violence and such.

Midori Yamada: Honestly, I’m not good at that stuff. I liked the live shows, but I really didn’t listen to that kind of music.

－Maririn: So trombone entered into that musical style.

Midori Yamada: Yeah. At first, there really were a lot of those kinds of songs.

Kento Yamazaki: There’s a hardcore band from Michigan with trombone vocals called Constantine Sankathi, and I thought it might turn out like that, but it didn’t at all.

Midori Yamada: San Diego has strong experimental elements. Keyboards are included, and it’s a bit new wave-ish. The looks are gothic too, everyone wearing white coats. The songs are weird and the looks are creepy.

Kento Yamazaki: Like bowl cuts with polo shirts tucked in but totally enraged. We loved that scene.

Midori Yamada: There were lots of hardcore bands in college that weren’t like Boston’s machismo.

Kento Yamazaki: I listened to a lot of that kind of music in college and wanted to do it. But things started changing around when we made the song “Dinosaurs are my ancestors(恐竜は俺の祖先)”.

Midori Yamada: Yeah. I said I wanted to do this kind of song and made it.

Ryoken Miyazaki: Was “Dinosaurs are my ancestors(恐竜は俺の祖先)” the first song you made by editing on a computer?

Midori Yamada: No, we did that one in the studio. Maybe “Grapefruit.” That’s the only one where I played both bass and guitar myself for parts other than the main riff.

Ryoken Miyazaki: Making songs through sessions was the main thing, but starting with “Grapefruit,” Midori began creating them.

Midori Yamada: Well, it started with sessions, but once I started sampling what we brought back from sessions, the beat feel increased. Before that, we were just making everything in sessions.
