Japan × Argentina Listen to ROTH BART BARON’s New Album“LOST AND FOUND”

From RAM’s Perspective

When the opportunity arose for me to take part in this cross-review, it appeared more challenging for me than in previous instances of these texts that Takita-san and I have been writing.

Speaking of personal experience, I am not foreign to the act of listening to music in languages I do not speak. But writing down my listening experience of an album, I can’t easily understand the lyrical content, and it ended up being a bit more complicated than I initially thought.

My angle for these reviews is always centred around my personal experience with the music. This often includes my interpretation and feelings drawn from the album. I believe it is the human aspect which is lacking from modern-day musical recommendations more than anything; therefore, I try to show my humanity as I speak about an album. Hopefully, in doing so, I may inspire someone to lend a kind ear to a work of art which they might resonate with.

Yabori was extremely kind as he presented me with a version of the lyrics translated into English for me to understand, but I felt my writing would gain a lot of depth if I decided to have my initial experience be completely blindfolded, and see how this approach would later be expanded by having the textual context of the music I listened to.

In doing this, I had my first bunch of listens of LOST AND FOUND, by ROTH BART BARON.

To Know You Are Lost

There can not be a whole without a contradiction. In order for a process to get into motion, it is essential for one truth to be put in contrast with its contradiction; Therefore, you could synthesize, for one to feel themselves found, it is essential to find themselves lost in the first place.

In ROTH BART BARON’s newest release, ‘Lost and Found’, the listener can witness this synthesis from its first stages, all the way to a sense of resolution which feels natural and earned by the time it arrives.

This work presents itself as an intimate and fragile piece which manages from the get-go to transport the listener to an abstract emotional place. It is from here that each word, note, and arrangement seems to be born. Falling to the physical world with the same cadence as drops of water coming out from a cloud which couldn’t hold it in anymore.

The listener is invited into the mind of the artist, wandering around the hallways of the feeling of loss. This set is so well crafted that you can easily interpret it without needing to understand the words being sung. The music speaks for itself. And in doing so, it resonates deep inside our emotions, leaving no questions about what the work is expressing.

This is achieved by a set of instrumentals which are varied in influences. These are successfully merged, creating an ethereal ambience which reminds us of the soundtrack of our dreams and distant memories. This is paired with vocal performances which do not shy away from showing the fragility which inspired these songs in the first place.

When adding the lyrical content into our perspective, the picture presents itself abstractly. This is the natural face of feelings. ROTH BART BARON uses dreamlike imagery, which amplifies the musical context and puts us right in the place where the feeling is born.

It tells the tale of a known emotion, one anyone could relate to. An uncomfortable place which is often dreaded but inevitably natural to all of us.

‘Lost and Found’ appears as an excellent representation of the process of healing. And in being so, it acts as a perfect companion and guide for us who find ourselves lost at any point. Wandering around our minds as we find our way to feeling found once again.
