Latest Album 『In Your Face!』
The Meaning of the Album Title
—Yuuki Takita: Now let’s talk about your latest album, 『In Your Face!』 First, could you tell us about the meaning of the album title 『In Your Face!』? It shares the same title as one of the tracks. What kind of feeling or vibe is reflected in this title?
That’s a great question because actually In Your Face takes a lot of different meanings for us. Firstly there’s the obvious interpretation that comes from the song, a sort of spiteful, childish sentiment that one feels when trying to get revenge. Then there’s the more sonic way to read it, “in your face” guitars, melodies, moments. There’s not a lot of room to breathe when listening to the album, and that’s exactly what we envision when we think in your face.
Evolution from Their Debut
—Yuuki Takita: Compared to your debut album 『Freak Scene』, while the aggressive and crisp tension in the guitar and beats continues, I feel the sonic aspect has become more developed. It felt very clean and flowing to me. As you moved forward with making this album, did you have discussions between the two of you? If there are any differences from your previous work, please tell us.
Yes, we actually went back and forth when trying to figure out the sonic world of this album. We definitely knew we wanted something different from Freak Scene… At first, we tried going a more pop, clean and polished route. But then when listening back we decided to take it up a notch and add some more of that rock sound that comes natural to us.
“Indie Boyz” as a Breakthrough
—Yuuki Takita: Was there a song that became a breakthrough in the making of this album? If so, could you tell us why? Personally, I feel that “Indie Boyz” is a song that only the current Pacifica could create—it unfolds with an industrial-textured sound and dance beats while still maintaining a solid harmony between guitar and bass. I think it’ll really get the crowd going at your live shows in Japan.
Oh yes, we were really surprised by the reaction of the crowds to Indie Boyz. We wrote it one afternoon in LA feeling silly after going out to a party at a bar called Tenants and even though we loved it we didn’t feel it belonged in the album. Our friends and people in the label insisted that we should record it and so we did. We spent two and a half weeks complaining and avoiding recording it and then the day came and it took us by surprise. It ended up actually being the most fun we had in the studio for this record. It feels great to have the crowds join in on the fun.
Philosophy as a Live Band
—Yuuki Takita: You’ve stated that you’re a live band. I could feel that the songs on this album were also created with live performances in mind—the dynamism, the development, and so on. Could you tell us if experiences from performing live influenced the songwriting on this album, or if there were any conscious decisions you made with live performance in mind?
For sure, playing live completely changed the way we write and produce our music. At the time we recorded Freak Scene, we hadn’t ever really played live, and when we started doing sso this magical feeling appeared on the songs that we couldn’t have discovered otherwise. Everytime you play something live, it evolves. We had a bunch of little moments in mind when writing and it’s great to be able to develop them in our live shows.
Music That Reaches Across Generations
—Yuuki Takita: Who do you want to listen to 『In Your Face!』? Or in what kind of situation do you want people to listen to it? If there’s a message you want listeners to take away, please share it.
We often meet people in the older demographic at our shows. They’re people who feel nostalgia for ’90s and Y2K rock. It makes us so happy to hear that people who used to go to Radiohead or No Doubt shows are now coming to our shows. It’s also inspiring to see the younger generation coming. It’s a truly precious moment when I realize that our music might inspire someone to pick up an instrument.
Surprise from the Japanese Audience
—Yuuki Takita: Please tell us your impressions from performing live in Japan.
Japan took us completely by surprise. We thought the crowds would be quiet like people in the streets, but actually they were super super energetic. Jumping with every song, super engaging. It felt like nothing we’ve ever done before. Definitely one of our favorite crowds to play for.
Message to Japanese Fans
—Yuuki Takita: Finally, you have many fans in Japan, and I’m among those paying close attention to you. Could you share a message for those fans?
I guess all we can say is thank you, thank you, thank you. We didn’t expect to get so much love from this country but we appreciate it so so very much. Know that we are continually making an effort to keep growing in Japan and to play more and more shows there each year.
