From Yuuki Takita’s Perspective

The second installment of the cross-review project with Argentina-based reviewer RAM.

In the previous “Racing Mount Pleasant cross-review,” RAM captured the sound image from their respective perspectives while evoking scenes sleeping deep in memory with “transience” and “hymns,” while I expressed “constructional beauty” by referencing “nihilism,” and we expressed the scenery beyond that in our own words.

Even though the words and expressions were different, there was resonance there. And RAM is undoubtedly an expressive person. The harvest from the previous cross-review was expressing oneself. Although we’ve never met and talked in person, I felt I understood a bit of who he is through his review. I also feel like I’m having a conversation with him through this project. It’s my first time feeling this way while writing reviews. I want both readers and him to know more about me. I don’t know if it’s correct as a reviewer, but I’m driven by such desire. I tried writing to satisfy that desire. And that also connects to Ninajirachi’s work described later. ‘I Love my Computer’ is a lump of self-love and self-expression itself.

Sakurazaka46 “Approval Desire” Remix

What caught my eye most in Ninajirachi’s discography was the remix of “Approval Desire” by Japanese idol group Sakurazaka46. For me, who properly listened to her work for the first time with this album ‘I Love my Computer,’ the collaboration between DJ Ninajirachi, who has performed at major overseas music festivals like Lollapalooza and EDC, and Sakurazaka46 seemed to have a gap, but it turned out to be an unnecessary worry. Rather, there must have been conviction in bringing both sides together.

For Ninajirachi, the distance to Japanese idols, anime, and game culture was quite close.

This was through computers, whether through direct connection or through the works of Grimes and Porter Robinson, who she publicly acknowledges as influences. Considering this, thinking about the Sakurazaka46 song “Approval Desire” remix, it was probably an extremely natural course of events.

And now for the main subject, ‘I Love my Computer’.

This time RAM recommended Ninajirachi’s work to me. To be honest, when I first listened to this work myself, “the sounds were cluttered and I didn’t understand.” Personally, I finally came to understand it after reading RAM’s review mentioned earlier and following Ninajirachi’s discography.

That makes sense. Just as the cluttered room in the jacket photo symbolizes, since it’s about Ninajirachi herself, the best way to understand and enjoy this work is to know her herself. Then you’ll notice the details and be able to connect to other artists.

If I were to list the music that forms Ninajirachi’s music, it would be electropop, dance pop, and EDM.

In the context of electropop and dance pop, listening through the flow from Charli XCX, Dua Lipa, and Erika de Casier reduces the gap, and in terms of EDM, Grimes and Porter Robinson get even closer to Ninajirachi’s music, and you can even sense French electro tastes and derive commonalities with Daft Punk.

Then what happens—doesn’t the music I “didn’t understand” become closer to you?

At least for me, it became quite familiar music. And I also understood that the music Ninajirachi likes and the music I like are very similar.

This work ‘I Love my Computer,’ which cluttered-ly arranges the music and culture she loves, is a work that encompasses multiple elements like complexly tangled cables, and whether you find it interesting or don’t understand it depends on the listener.

However, when you untangle it one by one, it’s actually quite simple and clear, and you understand it’s a work that expresses what she loves just as she loves it. When people talk about what they love, they become passionate and try to express that indescribable love in every possible way. That’s precisely why this work is chaotic and cluttered.

And it’s undoubtedly a work born precisely because we live in an era where any music or culture can be connected through computers. I myself was able to understand her by gathering information on my computer while going back and forth to understand this work. I was able to connect to my own loves as if re-experiencing the process she connected to what she loves.

This work expresses those complex connections and bringing distant things close, and ‘I Love my Computer’ has the necessity of being chaotic and cluttered. It’s a strange work and a delightful work.
