Fay Milton’s Goddess Interview – Beyond Savages, A New Sound

Last Updated on 2025-05-29 by a-indie

Special Collaboration

-Yuuki Takita: All the vocalists featured were wonderful, but “Shadows ft Ex:Re” was particularly striking. We understand you’ve been long-time friends with Elena Tonra (Ex:Re). Were there any particular points of inspiration you gained from co-creating this track with her?
Fay Milton: This track is one that I think of when I think about the vulnerability of working with friends. It was a big leap both for myself and Elena to do a track together, it’s a very different energy being friends with someone and writing music together but I’m really glad we were both brave. This track has something magical about it with Ayse Hassan’s bass and Hinako Omori’s piano also providing an incredible texture. Elena’s band Daughter and Savages were on the same touring cycle for our first and second albums, I think although really different bands, there is also something not too distant in the aesthetic. I think of these kind of collaborations as thinking “what if we did this?” I’m inspired by Elena’s delicate artistry, strength, grace and vulnerability. She’s also really sweet and funny.

Breakthrough Track

-Yuuki Takita: Within this album, which track represented a personal breakthrough for you, or which had the most stimulating creation process? Personally, I felt “Animal ft. Delilah Holliday” was one of the tracks with the biggest stylistic departure compared to Savages’ music, revealing a new side of your work.
Fay Milton: I would say Fuckboy.. There’s a particular ‘whoop’ sound on it, that when I put it on the track, it felt such a departure from how serious Savages were… I thought “I can’t do a ‘whoop’ sound can I?” I remember when I played it to Ayse, she laughed at the whoop. But I love it, it was a tiny act of rebellion.

Thoughts for the Listeners

-Yuuki Takita: Who do you hope will listen to ‘Goddess’? Or in what kind of situations do you imagine people listening to it? Are there any specific points in the lyrics or sound that you’d like listeners to pay particular attention to?
Fay Milton: I hope Goddess will meet a wide range of people, as there are lots of diverse collaborators, I hope this helps the music spread to people I couldn’t imagine. I also hope I can play a small part in inspiring women and girls to produce music. I know in Savages how many females told me I had inspired them to play the drums. It may not seem obvious but sometimes females feel like they need ‘permission’ to do things that are usually monopolised by males, so I hope this goes a small way to granting that permission to someone! You can do it!

Message to Japanese Listeners

-Yuuki Takita: We are confident that your music will deeply resonate with Japanese music fans. Finally, could you please leave a message for your listeners in Japan?
Fay Milton: I would feel so honoured and blessed if listeners from Japan listen to my music. Music is communication and I hope to communicate something magical with you from the other side of the world. Japan is so deep in my soul and the thought of my music playing in headphones and speakers there fills my heart. Thank you!!!

Thank you so much for asking such thoughtful questions, I really appreciate the time you have taken to listen to the album, and your enthusiasm makes me so happy, thank you!

Goddess Profile

クレジット:Tom Furse
Goddess is the music project of producer and drummer Fay Milton. Known as the former drummer of Savages, she creates music with diverse guest vocalists and instrumentalists, centering on female and gender-expansive creativity and collaboration. Her debut album “Goddess” features 10 tracks spanning post-punk, electronica, dream-pop, and indie rock. After Savages went on hiatus, Fay chose a non-touring production style due to her awareness of the climate crisis. This led to the free-spirited idea of featuring different artists on each track and incorporating instruments like harps and strings. This work is a personal and collective expression built with the community of London’s independent music scene, with Fay pushing feminine energy to the forefront as a producer. The album name signifies not self-deification but a reverence for the beauty and spirit dwelling in all things.
