Strange Fruit Return After a Decade with New EP “Drips”

Jakarta’s electronic band Strange Fruit release their long-awaited EP ‘Drips’ on April 3, 2026, marking their first new music in ten years. Spanning acid house, ambient, shoegaze and rave across nine tracks, the EP also features remixes by Tom Furse (The Horrors), Jonathan Kusuma, and Hardway Bros. The record was previewed exclusively for members of the BELONG Media, A-indie🌈 Discord community, and their responses are shared at the end of this article.

Who Are Strange Fruit

Strange Fruit is an electronic band formed in Jakarta in 2012. The group consists of five members: Baldi Kalvianka (Vo., Syn.), Ilza Ariadyaz (Syn.), John Tampubolon (Gt.), Nabil Favian (Ba.), and Dino Kristianto (Dr.).

Combining the textural weight of shoegaze with slow-tempo electronica, the band has built a sound world where dreamy soundscapes drift alongside an unwavering dance pulse.

In 2015, they released a five-track cassette EP, ‘The Dolphin Leap’, through Leeds Records. The lead track was included in Demajors’ compilation ‘Fairytales of Megabiodiversity’ in 2016, and the EP was reissued by Lamunai Records in 2020.

After a hiatus of roughly ten years, the band returned in 2026 through Jakarta label Gentle Tuesday Recordings.

‘Drips’

‘Drips’ is an EP that takes acid house as its central axis and moves freely across a wide range of genres.

Shoegaze textures dissolve into krautrock-disco grooves, while basslines that recall 90s UK house pulse steadily underneath — the whole thing pointing toward a machine-driven electronic pop that feels both new and deeply rooted.

Influences ranging from The Jesus and Mary Chain, David Bowie, Brian Eno, Broadcast and Stereolab can all be heard across the record.

Baldi Kalvianka (Vo., Syn.) has described chasing “strange sounds that couldn’t be found on guitar,” and explained that the work took shape in the period following the pandemic. Ilza Ariadyaz (Syn.) describes the current sound as “electric yet weightless.”

Producer Bernardus Fritz joined the sessions, combining sequenced drum machines with analogue drums and stripped-back basslines to shape the new sonic identity of Strange Fruit, where electronic and rock elements meet and hold.

About the Tom Furse Remix

“Monopolar (Tom Furse Remix)” is the work of Tom Furse, a member of The Horrors who also works as a visual designer.

Keeping the tempo of the original intact, Furse pushes the electronics into noisier, more abrasive territory while leaving the dreamy synth textures in place. The result is a version defined by deliberate tension — a version that intentionally refuses to resolve into a climax.

Tom Furse studied at the London College of Communication before beginning his career in 2005 as a member of The Horrors. The band has made five albums together, three of which reached the top six of the UK Albums Chart. He is also active as a composer, remixer and record producer, and brings a background in visual art to everything he makes.

A wonderful record where many different genres come together seamlessly.
I thought it was a cool mixture of genres.

The music and production quality are outstanding!
Love the music and production is superb!

There were moments that reminded me of 80s classics like The Human League and Depeche Mode, and others that brought to mind the classic shoegaze bands. I genuinely enjoyed it, and felt both elements paired beautifully together — a very well-balanced record.
It reminded me of classics from the 80s, such as the work of The Human League or Depeche Mode, and also of the classic shoegaze bands. I truly enjoyed it and thought both things worked well paired with each other!

Listen for yourself and experience the sound this band arrived at after ten years of silence.
